Senior Thesis for a Bachelors in Architecture from Virginia Tech 2015.
The sleeper is not in the realm of the active community. The body is, but the sleep is not .This disconnection renders the body, left behind by the sleeper, vulnerable. This is where the need for security derives. When the body is rendered non-existent to the active realm the conditions for pure sleep are met. This pure sleep enables a pure active existence.
This thesis pursues the question of how to create the non-existent spatially through the study of a Sleep Typology. The pursuit examines the environment required for sleep.
This project called for an intergenerational facility in Blacksburg, VA to accommodate Children; from toddlers to school-age, and Senior Citizens. The center is to operate from 7am to 5pm. The site for the project is next to an existing but smaller intergenerational facility on the Virginia Tech campus.
Where architecture meets the Reggio Emelia approach was the investigation in this project. The Reggio Emelia approach is a method of early childhood education, one focus is on community building, making the community greater than the sum of all parts. Sited on campus, 3 aspects of society; children, collegians, elderly, become the building blocks of the micro-community. Using the site as the first tool of design, the existing area is used as a pathway for students and faculty to get to their buildings or cars. The Center did not want to upset this balance and attempts to heighten the experience by offering a glimpse of the activity going on within the center, with a community gallery, children’s lawn, and a clerestory that allows a look in, all on the brick path.
Case Study: Caplutta Sogn Benedegt
This folio is for a case study for my favorite building, the Caplutta Sogn Benedegt by Peter Zumthor. While this was done before I was able to personally visit, much of what I loved about this building rings truer now that I have been. The attention to detail and the way the building invites you to read its every detail is what I am inspired by.
This Dodgeball League is something I do as a hobby. I have learned coding to produce a simple online dodgeball game to play while relaxing. Part of that relaxing is making volumes like this. Documenting each season and offseason.
