Big Leaf Café

2025 - HELT Design

Renovation

As the first project of a masterplan with Daniel Stowe Conservancy, our team brought a much needed renovation to the gift shop inside of the Visitor Pavilion that greets visitors before entering the Gardens. From concept sketches to Certificate of Occupancy, we ensured a successful project for Stowe.

The scope of the project called for subdividing the existing gift shop into a retail/cafe space and a space for their caterer to prepare foods. The exterior of the shop received a new deer fence and an entrance pergola.

As with any renovation, there were challenges once the drywall came down. Coordinating and rerouting existing duct challenged the team to come up with solutions that kept the design intent and client happy.

We were able to salvage a large amount of unused brick pavers to use in new pathways towards the Big Leaf Café. We worked with an Italian moss company to perfectly match the brand colors in natural moss for a dramatic backdrop for the seating area inside the cafe.

The new space lifts the visitor experience into the next phase for Daniel Stowe Conservancy while honoring the strong culture and history that has been cultivated.
